ARCADIA (Oct. 22, 2014) – Arcadia’s town marshal will resign by the end of the year after being criticized for his handling of an investigation into the home invasion robbery and beating of a 94-year-old World War II veteran.

William Hickrod confirmed the news with FOX59 Wednesday.

“I don’t want to be somewhere I’m not wanted,” Hickrod told our media partners at the IndyStar. “If people don’t believe in you, you don’t need to be working for them.”

Herschel “Bud” Moore, 94, was attacked at his home on Oct. 10. After tying Moore up and beating him, the intruders ransacked his home and stole items, police said. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office investigated the crime, arresting Joseph Michael Lowe, 26, Indianapolis, and Justin Wayne Lawson, 27, Cicero.

At a meeting this week, Arcadia residents blasted Hickrod for his handling of the investigation, saying he did a poor job of gathering evidence. Hickrod admitted that he made mistakes and said he understood it would be hard for his critics to forgive him.

He told the IndyStar he wanted to step down so the town council wouldn’t be burdened by complaints or be put in a position to fire him.

Before serving as Arcadia’s town marshal, Hickrod spent 30 years with the Fishers Police Department. He worked as a reserve officer before becoming town marshal in 2012.
