INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Aug. 10, 2014) — A domestic dispute ended in tragedy overnight Sunday on the north side of Indianapolis. A man shot and killed a woman in front of police, pointed a gun at officers, and then turned that gun on himself.

The victim has been identified by her family as 24-year-old Candice Hunter.

“As far as I know everything was just perfect.  She met the guy and they started dating, and  as far as I know he was a stand-up guy,” said Hunter’s father Leha Williams.

Police were called to a domestic dispute in the Hoover Park Condominiums in the 6400 block of Park Central Way, just after 1 a.m. Sunday. They encountered a man arguing with Hunter in the hallway, just at the entrance of the building.

Police say the man shot Hunter in the head, then pointed the gun at two officers. Hunter was pronounced dead on the scene.

“You took our loved one from us the one who was very special to us and it pains my heart but at the same time I do forgive him because I am a child of God,” said Williams.

IMPD dispatchers earlier said the man had fired at officers, but that was later said to be unclear. What police do know is that the two officers shot at the suspect and he ran off.  The door and window of the apartment was riddled with bullets.

Moments later officers heard a gunshot and a 911 call came through reporting a man lying in the grass behind an apartment building. It was the suspect. Police discovered the man with a gunshot wound to the head, apparently self-inflicted, and a graze wound to the shoulder.

“The male was transported from the scene to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition,” said Rafael Diaz with IMPD.

“You took our loved one from us the one who was very special to us and it pains my heart but at the same time I do forgive him because I am a child of God,” said Williams.

Police have  identified the shooter as Hunter’s boyfriend, Josh Higgins.  The couple had a 6-month-old child together.  Hunter also leaves behind a 23-month-old. Both of them were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting and were not hurt.

Williams said that the couple attended a concert at the Klipsch Music Center earlier in the night.

“I don’t know how something like that can happen I just had him in my home maybe one month ago and everything seemed perfect.  We would have never seen this coming,”said Williams.

Williams says that Hunter recently moved to Indianapolis from Chicago in order to better her life.
