INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 1, 2014) — Finally! We are one step closer to some relief to the pothole problem in Indianapolis.
The Public Works Committee of the City-County Council voted Thursday night to release $8.3 million for road repairs. The money is part of more than $15 million the Department of Public Works requested.
During the winter, Indianapolis roads took a beating. The pothole patching that has been going on for months isn’t a permanent fix–many roads need more. When Hoosiers found out about the money being approved for road repairs, drivers got excited.
“That’s a good idea,” said Jim Yates. “It’ll save people’s vehicles from being damaged, keep people safe.”
“That’s good news, hopefully when I get back from vacation, there’ll be some fixed,” said Katlyn Yates.
During the Thursday night meeting, DPW leaders identified the roads that they think are some of the worst, with repairs estimated at $24 million. However, with the $8.3 million, not every one of those roads will be fixed.
“It’s a drop in the bucket, considering what we need, and we obviously need more money to complete our infrastructure project,” said Lori Miser with the Department of Public Works. “This is a start in the right direction.”
When Hoosiers were trapped in the deep freeze, DPW spent a fortune pre-treating, salting and plowing. They were approved $7 million that’ll go in to the budget for this past winter, and to begin the winter to come.
The full City-County Council will take this up on May 12.
