INDIANAPOLIS (April 24, 2014) – A man died Thursday morning after his bicycle collided with a school bus on Indianapolis’ north side.

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. Thursday near Westlane and Ditch roads.  Police said the bus, a Durham School Services bus contracted by Indianapolis Public Schools, was driving east on Westlane and making a left turn onto Ditch, when it collided with the bicyclist.  The bicyclist, later identified as 24-year-old Neil Kelty, was believed to be heading west on Westlane in the designated bicycle lane.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol contributed to the accident.  The bus driver, 72-year-old Bessie Smith of Indianapolis, was given a blood draw as standard procedure.

No students were aboard the bus at the time of the accident.

Investigators do not anticipate making an arrest and believe the incident was a tragic accident.
