INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 20, 2014) – A robbery suspect has died after being shot by police Saturday night on the south side, police say.

It happened at the GameStop on South East Street near National Avenue. Police received a call from a concerned citizen Saturday evening after seeing three men putting on masks. Officers, who were already in the area on patrol, arrived just after the robbery started.

After setting up a perimeter around the store, officers could see three suspects wearing masks and holding store employees at gunpoint inside the store.

One of the suspects burst out of the back door of the video game store and started waving a gun. Officers told the suspect to put the gun down, but he refused. Officers opened fire and the suspect was hit in the upper torso.

The suspect–identified Monday as 22-year-old Terrell Lucas–was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in serious condition. He later died from his wounds. Two other suspects–identified as 23-year-old Walter Fells and 21-year-old Jalil Hannah–were taken into custody. Both are charged with murder, robbery and criminal confinement. They’re being held in the Marion County Jail. All three men are from Chicago, police said.

IMPD has not released the names of officers who responded to the incident. Those involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure as the investigation continues.

No police officers were injured, and no one inside the GameStop was hurt.

Officer Christopher Wilburn with IMPD called this an example of community engagement since someone reported seeing something suspicious to police. He said the department welcomes important tips such as the one received in this case.
