MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (September 6, 2014) — A Merrillville police officer is recovering after being shot while responding to a call Friday night.

Officer Nickolaus Schultz, 24, was responding to an “unwanted party” call at Tempe Lake Condominiums just before 11PM to investigate a man who supposedly moved back into his condo after being evicted earlier this year. The suspect and officer Schultz exchanged fire, and Schultz was shot in the head. The suspect, who was wearing bullet-resistant armor, was killed.

Schultz, a one year veteran of the department, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and is listed in critical condition.

The incident is still under investigation.
