MOORESVILLE, Ind. (Oct. 24, 2014) — A person is dead after a crash involving a motorcycle and garbage truck.
The crash happened Friday afternoon along State Road 144 near Smokey Row Road in Mooresville. The driver of the truck suffered non life-threatening injuries, and was taken to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis by ambulance. Investigators say the truck tipped over after the driver tried to avoid the motorcycle.
Witnesses told investigators the motorcycle was following a Lincoln Continental and tried to pass it. At that same time, the garbage truck was coming the other way and the biker slammed in to the truck’s back end.
“Causing the trash truck driver to react, he steered to the right,” said Morgan County Sheriff Robert Downey pointing toward the crash scene. “There’s an embankment here. The truck rolled over in to a field.”
Sheriff Downey said this crash should serve as a safety reminder.
“The bikers need to be trained on their motorcycle. Take the ABATE courses, and what have you, to learn the safety and how to ride a motorcycle properly,” Sheriff Downey said.
The name of the motorcyclist won’t be released until family has been told. The road was re-opened just after 5 p.m.
