INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 6, 2014)– Police officers arrest a man said to have committed a hit-and-run that left an infant dead.
Detectives have arrested Gary Shinnamon II, 30, of Indianapolis and preliminarily charged him with failure to stop at an accident resulting in death (class C felony) and two counts of driving while license suspended (class C and D felonies).
The suspect turned himself into detectives at his attorney’s office earlier this afternoon. Police records show Shinnamon has a previous arrest for driving while intoxicated.
Indianapolis Metropolitan police said the infant boy died Wednesday morning, hours after the Tuesday night crash near West 38th Street and southbound I-65 in which a black Dodge rear-ended a blue compact car. The 7-month-old infant was ejected and landed in the street.
He went to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in serious condition. His condition soon worsened, and IMPD said he died Wednesday morning. Police say the infant wasn’t properly strapped into his car seat.
Witnesses at the scene, as well as the 7-month-old victim’s father, played a critical role in helping hit-and-run detectives identify the driver. Additionally, detectives received a number of tips from the community that provided helpful information.
Officers said Shinnamon was driving recklessly and speeding on East 38th Street approaching I-65 when he collided with the back of the family’s small car, causing it to spin out.
