INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 20, 2014) — A rash of shootings in Indianapolis overnight left four people dead and a 10-year-old girl wounded after she was hit in the crossfire.
That injury count does not include a police action shooting that took place early Tuesday morning.
The deadliest incident happened shortly before 10 p.m. Monday at the 5200 block of Lakemanor Drive on the northwest side.
“There’s a lot of shell casings back there,” said Lt. Chris Bailey of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
IMPD said two male victims were found dead outside the front door of the house, while a third shooting victim was found behind the home. The third victim was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition and later died. IMPD identified two of the victims as Stranger Dunn, 34, Indianapolis, and Esker Dodson-Walker, 33, Indianapolis. The third victim has been identified but police have not notified his family and are withholding his name, IMPD said. Police later identified him as Valdemar Enriquez, 21, Corpus Christi, Texas.
A fourth victim at the Lakemanor Drive scene was a 10-year-old girl, police said. Bailey said the girl was inside her nearby home when a stray bullet from the shootout struck her in the upper leg or rear. She was taken to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and is expected to be OK.
One man, who police said fled the house, was detained a short distance away, on the 5200 block of Moller Road. His identity has not been released.
Around the same time, IMPD reported another shooting at the 6400 block of Creekshore Lane. This second incident involved a 19-year-old man suffering a bullet graze wound to the head. No arrests have been made in that case.
The fourth fatality occurred at a separate scene on the 4000 block of Boulevard Place.
In that case, eight children all under the age of 10 were home when a man in his 20s was fatally shot, police said. Police later identified him as Patrick Martin, 24, Indianapolis.
Investigators said one of the children likely witnessed the shooting, which is believed to have started as a robbery.
“Two of the incidents tonight had children involved in some form or fashion,” Bailey said. “Any time you have children involved, it definitely makes it even more unfortunate.”
IMPD only described the suspects in the Boulevard Place homicide as two black men. FOX59 News has requested additional details on the suspects.
