INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 17, 2014)— Two Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers are dead following an apparent murder-suicide Thursday night.
A SWAT team was dispatched just around 5:40 p.m. to a house in the 2400 block of Inishmore Court, where they found Sgt. Ryan Anders and Officer Kimberlee Carmack dead.
Neighbors told FOX59 that gunshots were heard, and the neighborhood was later placed on lockdown.
Sources said Carmack had a temporary protective order served on Anders, her ex-husband, and a hearing was scheduled for April 29. FOX59 was told the couple, who was divorced in October 2013, was on administrative leave at the time of the incident.
Mayor Greg Ballard, Public Safety Director Troy Riggs and IMPD Chief Rick Hite gave an update Thursday night. They said officers are working diligently to get answers about the tragic incident.
“We lost two of our own,” said the mayor. “This one hurts deeply, very deeply.”
Chief Hite said it appeared Anders forced his way into the back of Carmack’s house before the fatal shootings occurred.
“This is a sad day for the IMPD family and a community as a whole”, said Hite. “The department, including the FOP, has deployed all of our available resources to help a grieving department.”
Authorities said this was a domestic situation, and no one else was involved.
Officials said Officer Carmack has been with the department for 20 years and Sgt. Anders for nine.
