INDIANAPOLIS (May 21, 2014) – A reorganization means three Indianapolis Catholic parishes will close in November.
Archbishop Joseph Tobin made the announcement Wednesday morning at Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral. Holy Trinity, Holy Cross and St. Bernadette parishes are affected by the move and will close on Nov. 30, 2014. Parishioners will join nearby parishes. The changes affect about 1,000 people.
The archdiocese said the move was part of a plan 16 months in the making called “Connected in the Spirit.” Church leaders and lay representatives from the 47 parishes in Marion and neighboring counties have been discussing structural changes to help the church adapt to an ever-changing world.
Tobin cited shifts in Catholic populations, attendance and a decline in the number of available clergy for the changes.
Some parishes will share pastors, including Good Shepherd and Holy Name in Beech Grove and St. Rita and Holy Angels. That will start July 1, Tobin said.
Other parishes will share resources and clergy.
