Christopher Schafer, 23, was arrested on charges of murder, neglect resulting in the death of a child and battery to a child resulting in death.

Just after 1 a.m. Wednesday, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to an apartment in the 6800 block of Brendon Way South Drive in reference to an unresponsive baby.  The 3-month-old girl was transported to Community North Hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead a short time later.

According to a police report, the father said he fell asleep with his daughter on his chest. Schafer told police when he woke up, he found the baby trapped between him and the couch and said the infant wasn’t breathing.

However, an autopsy revealed the manner of death was a homicide by blunt force trauma to the head and left leg.

The Marion County Prosecutor is still reviewing the case and has not filed formal charges at this time.
