INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (July 12, 2014) — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police detectives are investigating a fatal shooting on the city’s far east side.
Police dispatchers say a woman returned home around 11 a.m. Saturday to find her husband shot. She ran to neighbors for help and to call police. When officers arrived, they located an unresponsive male inside the home. He has been identified as Dexter Smith, 31, of Indianapolis. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. It is believed he lives where he was found.
Neighbors say Smith is a father of three young children.
“My heart really goes out to them,” said Shelley Covington.
Covington says her children plays with Smith’s kids.
“Way too much homicides, way too many, stop the violence,” Covington said.
Detectives are following several leads, but don’t think this was a random shooting.
