INDIANAPOLIS – As the city combats a rising murder rate, a funeral home in Indianapolis is taking care of the families left behind.

From victims of shootings to drug overdoses, Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Centers have worked on several difficult services this year. While police, prosecutors and faith-based leaders work to reduce the number of unexpected and tragic deaths, the specially trained staff at the funeral home takes on the challenge of helping families of these victims grieve and move forward.

“I think our city is dealing with the same challenges every large city is dealing with,” said Funeral Director Jan Smith. “Our role is really to create a supportive environment for the family where we get to know their loved one through the sharing of memories and stories and then help them to create an event that’s meaningful.”

Smith said her staff doesn’t just help with funeral services, they actually continue to monitor the grieving family’s progress years down the road to make sure they are thriving.

“We have partners that offer grief support programs, grief education for families,” explained Smith. “Our goal is to form a bond with that family and continue with them through the journey, whatever their needs be.”

Sometimes, Smith said, the tragedies can also be tough on her staff. However, they work to take care of each other and their clients. She has hope that things will take a turn for the better as long as the community continues to spread the message that death is very real and can impact lives forever.

“It takes one poor decision to change a life,” said Smith. “I’m confident that if any city can overcome the challenges, it’s the city of Indianapolis.”
