A 23-year-old woman was officially charged Wednesday in connection with a crash that killed a young Franklin, Ind. man.
Morgan Mannix was arrested last Saturday morning after police said she hit 23-year-old Alex Trabert in the 7400 block of North Shadeland Avenue, located on the northeast side. Trabert was pronounced deceased on the scene.
Authorities said Mannix, who is from Kansas City, Mo., fled the scene but she was located later that day. She was later transported to Wishard Hospital for a blood draw, before being taken to jail.
In court Wednesday, Mannix had no comment when Fox59 asked if alcohol played a factor in the crash. However, Mannix’s mother stated they were just “very sorry for the family” of Trabert.
According to the probable cause, Mannix’s father approached detectives while they were processing the scene, stating his daughter said she may have struck someone on Shadeland Ave. When authorities arrived to the home, they located Mannix’s vehicle, which they said had damage consistent with a pedestrian accident.
While speaking with Mannix, a detective noted he smelled an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from her, according to court documents.
Following her blood draw, authorities questioned Mannix about the incident. According to the probable cause, Mannix stated she consumed a margarita while at dinner with her parents. She stated she later went to a friend’s house, where she consumed “maybe six beers.” Mannix told authorities she stopped drinking at 1 a.m.
Mannix said she was driving home when she struck something at approximately 2:30 a.m. She said the impact caused her windshield to shatter, but she could not see what she hit because it was dark outside. Mannix told authorities she went home to sleep but didn’t report the accident to her father until 8:30 a.m. She said she was “freaked out” and panicked and stated she made a terrible decision by leaving the scene of the crash.
According to the probable cause, it was determined Mannix’s blood registered positive for alcohol more than seven hours after the crash occurred.
A not-guilty plea was entered on behalf of Mannix in court Wednesday, according to her attorney.
