BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (October 3, 2015) — The Monroe County Sheriff’s department says the body found in a lake near Indiana University’s campus Friday evening is that of missing IU student Joseph Smedley.

A spokesperson says the cause of death is consistent with drowning.

Smedley was reported missing earlier this week after telling a family member he was leaving the country.

His family released the following statement on Saturday:

“We would like to thank the media and public for their continuing coverage of helping us find our beloved Joseph. It’s been a difficult week for our family after hearing the recent developments. We ask that you let our family grieve in private so we can begin the healing process. Your thoughts and prayers would be greatly appreciated.”

Smedley’s parents released this statement Monday:

“We’ve been trying to find closure during this tragedy, but it’s difficult to do so when there are so many unanswered questions. We’re not leaving any stones unturned. We’re working diligently to get to the bottom of Joseph’s death and appreciate all the thoughts and prayers from the community.”

Additionally, Smedley’s father wrote a background on his son’s life.
