TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (August 4, 2015)– Northbound I-65 lanes between State Road 26 and State Road 25 are closed due to a structural bridge problem over Wildcat Creek, near Lafayette. Officials say that stretch of I-65 will now remain closed until Thursday.

The closure originally started around 3 p.m. on Tuesday.  INDOT spokesperson Debbie Calder says crews working near-by noticed unusual movement on the bridge. From there, inspectors determined some of the bearings fell, although the cause is still unclear. While workers add support to the bridge, I-65 north will stay closed and drivers will have to take detours around that area.

“They called us for work, and I work for a construction company in Lafayette, and they called us and told us the bridge was out and we had to take alternate routes all day,” said Romney resident August Verhey.

State police officer and INDOT workers were in the town of Romney throughout Wednesday morning to help direct all the extra traffic caused by the detours.

Indiana State Police have provided the following alternate routes:

  • Exiting at State Road 38 (the 168 MM): Go west on SR 38 until you get to Sagamore Parkway. Go north on Sagamore Parkway until you get to the SR 25 north intersection. Go north on SR 25 until you reach the I-65 north entrance ramp.
  • Exiting at State Road 26: Go west on SR 26 until you reach Sagamore Parkway. Go right ill you reach the SR 25 north intersection. Go north on SR 25 until you reach the I-65 north entrance ramp.
  • Coming from Indianapolis: Exit at the 141 MM onto US 52 and take it all the way through Lafayette and follow the SR 25 north intersection to I-65 as stated in the other two alternative routes.

Police say local Lafayette drivers should attempt to find alternate routes of travel during the afternoon commute.
