MADISON COUNTY (Dec. 26, 2014) – A Madison County judge Friday granted prosecutors a 72-hour hold to file formal charges against a man accused of trying to drug his girlfriend to cause a miscarriage on Christmas Day.
Authorities arrested an Elwood man, Jarod Rebuck, 25, on Thursday and said he preliminarily faced a charge of attempted feticide.
Rebuck appeared via video conference before a judge, politely answered questions when asked, and kept his head down for the brief court hearing. The judge set his bond at $20,000.
Because prosecutors were given extra time to formalize and file charges, charging documents were not yet available.
Investigators were called to a home in the 9900 block of West Main Street in Fishersburg on Christmas Day. Rebuck’s girlfriend told them something had been put in her drink.
According to investigators, Rebuck later admitted it was a substance to make the woman miscarry.
FOX59 learned that Rebuck is the father of the unborn child, and the woman involved did not have a miscarriage. Investigators also said that Rebuck had deen online research, via his cell phone, trying to find a substance to cause a miscarriage.
FOX59 went to Rebuck’s home, where nobody answered the door. A neighbor who didn’t want to be identified hadn’t heard of the arrest but described the family as upstanding.
Rebuck declined our request for a jailhouse interview.
Prosecutors in Madison County have until December 31st to file formal charges.
