INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Sept. 8, 2015)– Richard Grundy appeared in Marion Superior Court to be charged with ordering the killings of four rivals as his own circle of support seems to be shrinking.
Investigators tell FOX59 News more than 20 unsolved killings in Indianapolis may linked to Grundy’s crew.
Grundy told the Court that he does not yet have an attorney to defend him on the murder counts though he might consider representing himself, which raised eyebrows in the courtroom.
Jailed since leading police on a chase, complete with flying bullets, during a January drug bust, Grundy’s influence on his inner circle may be waning.
“A lot of them are in jail, some of them aren’t and that’s where our attention turns to next,” said Deputy Prosecutor Denise Robinson. “Hopefully we send the message that we have turned our attention to this organization. Hopefully we do send the message that we do have him locked up and we will get other individuals to cooperate. We do know that there are other individuals out there with information. Now we just need to get them to talk.”
In the winter of 2014 two double murders were carried out on the near east and north sides of Indianapolis, targeting Grundy enemies.
John Means is accused of killing Tyrece Dorsey and William Davis as Grundy’s own father coincidentally was nearby as informants told police there were “spotters” on the scene.
Within a week, detectives claim Means struck again, killing Julius Douglas and Carlos Jefferson.
An informant told investigators that Douglas and Jefferson were killed for their failure to murder a Grundy rival, Lorenzo Clark, who was eventually slain.
The informant said Clark was a witness to the murder of Michael Lacy who was killed by a Grundy relative.
Jefferson’s sister was in court to view the initial hearing of the man accused of ordering her brother’s murder.
“You hear things but you don’t always believe everything that you hear, but when prosecutors bring these type of allegations to a person, I guess that it’s unfortunate,” said Jasmine Jackson. “There’s no winner in this situation. This family was very close to us so it almost breaks family ties.”
Along with Means, Grundy now faces murder and conspiracy charges.
Grundy is represented in the January drug case by attorney David Hennessey who has yet to be engaged in the murder case.
