HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. (August 4, 2015)– Police arrested a man Monday on charges filed last week in a fatal crash on I-70 near Greenfield.

Charles Goodman, 53, was the man behind the wheel of a church bus when it crashed, killing a 6-year-old boy. Goodman faces charges of reckless homicide and driving with a suspended license.

On July 28, the bus was on eastbound I-70 just past Greenfield when it crashed. Goodman reportedly told investigators he fell asleep. One child died and 11 other people had to be hospitalized.

Troopers say Goodman had been driving with a suspended license since 2007. He was also wanted in Lake County for not showing up to court. Goodman allegedly has never had a valid Indiana driver’s license.

Goodman had a broken arm and fractured jaw. He was released from the hospital, arrested and taken to the Hancock County Jail.

During his initial hearing on Tuesday, the clerk set his bond at $30,000.

He told reporters that the bus had problems with its suspension and power steering and was overheating.

If convicted, Goodman could face up to 6 years for the reckless homicide charge and 1 year for the driving while suspended charge.
